When Prompt or Specialized Medical Care Is Needed

Prompt medical care may be needed for:
• Increasing or spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or pain
• New or increasing drainage, pus, bleeding, or an unpleasant odor
• Fever, chills, weakness, or feeling generally unwell
• A deep, large, rapidly changing, or nonhealing wound
• Red streaking extending away from the affected area
• Dark, black, pale, or otherwise concerning skin discoloration
• Exposed tissue or bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure
• A wound involving significant circulation concerns or uncontrolled swelling
• Any rapidly worsening concern, especially for a patient with diabetes or reduced sensation
